Convert deb to rpm
converts between Red Hat rpm, Debian deb, Stampede slp, Slackware tgz, and Solaris pkg file formats ... It also supports LSB packages.

Using ASCII Art output on MPlayer
Not so useful. Just a cool feature.

connects to a serial console
cu (call UNIX) establishes a full-duplex connection to another machine (*BSD) using a serial console. It becames more useful than screen if you have to send a BREAK signal. using cu just type "~#". $man cu http://www.openbsd.org/cgi-bin/man.cgi?query=cu&apropos=0&sektion=0&manpath=OpenBSD+Current&arch=i386&format=html

Empty a file
Immediately make a file empty. This even works if the file is still being written to. Great for cleaning up huge log files!

Better git diff, word delimited and colorized
I've been using colordiff for years. wdiff is the new fav, except its colors. Word delimited diffs are more interleaved, easing the chore of associating big blocks of changes.

Set laptop display brightness
Run as root. Path may vary depending on laptop model and video card (this was tested on an Acer laptop with ATI HD3200 video). $ cat /proc/acpi/video/VGA/LCD/brightness to discover the possible values for your display.

Go to tmp : cd /tmp; mkdir retmp; cd retmp Create 10 files : for i in {1..10}; do touch test$i; done Remove all files except test10 : rm !(test10)

Remove Suspend option from XFCE logoff dialog

Google text-to-speech in mp3 format
EDIT: command updated to support accented characters! Works in any of 58 google supported languages (some sound like crap, english is the best IMO). You get a mp3 file containing your query in spoken language. There is a limit of 100 characters for the "q" parameter, so be careful. The "tl" parameter contains target language.

Extract a remote tarball in the current directory without having to save it locally
